13-Year-Old Waiting In Drop-Off Line Shoots Allegedly Father In Car, Heads For School

Louisiana police arrested a 13-year-old boy after he allegedly shot his father Tuesday morning in the car drop-off line close to a school.

The shooting occurred at about 7:39 a.m. near the Tangipahoa Alternative School following an argument between the unidentified teen and his father, the Hammond Police Department (HPD) said, according to WDSU6 News. A school resource officer responded to the vehicle during the argument in which the teen allegedly told his father he didn’t want to attend school. The teen’s father then decided to take him home, police said.

The school resource officer allegedly heard gunfire as the teen’s father began making his way out of the car drop-off line. The teen’s father accelerated across the street and crashed into a home, causing damage, police said. A preschool-aged child was in the car’s backseat during the alleged shooting and was not hurt. Another relative is caring for the child. (RELATED: ‘What Are You Doing?’: UPS Plane Avoids Collision With Jet After Suspending Landing)

Following the crash, the teen allegedly approached the school’s side door while armed with the gun. HPD Police Chief Edwin Bergeron, Jr. said the teen was apprehended and disarmed by the school resource officer, according to WWLTV.

The school, which serves 250 students, went into lockdown over the incident, a move that was later lifted, the outlet reported. Bergeron, Jr. said the entire incident took place within a minute of the original radio call.

“We don’t know what his [the student’s] intentions were… but our trained officer put himself in danger, disarmed the shooter, and was able to take him into custody,” he said. Bergeron, Jr. said the teen’s father was transported to a local hospital while severely injured, but he’s now stable.

The teen was taken to the Florida Parish Juvenile Detention Center for processing, according to WWLTV. The incident remains under investigation.

Tangipahoa Alternative School retains two resource officers as well as metal detectors, school officials said, according to KPLC. Assistant Superintendent Ron Genco said the school also carries out monthly active shooter drills, according to WWLTV.
