California pit bull puppy revived after overdosing on owners’ fentanyl

A California pit bull puppy was revived with Narcan after appearing to overdose on its owners’ fentanyl, authorities said.

The incident occurred Wednesday after the dog discovered the fentanyl stash in a couple’s vehicle outside of a Walmart, according to a release from the Irvine Police Department.

“Their puppy inside the car was exposed to fentanyl and began to show signs of an overdose,” the release read.


“Officers gave the dog a dose of Narcan, and she immediately began to recover. An IPD officer quickly transported the dog to an emergency veterinarian for treatment.”

The couple was arrested, and the puppy is recovering with the IPD’s animal service unit, according to the release.

“Caleb Aaron Gibson, 29, of San Juan Capistrano, and Katherine Marylou Menke, 27, of Santa Ana, were arrested,” police said. “We have asked the DA to charge the pair with felony animal cruelty and possession of narcotics. We thank the officers for their swift actions.”
