‘WHY?’: Ex-Trump Official Leaves CNN Panel Shocked Over Refusal To Answer ‘Gotcha’ Question

CNN panelists were left shocked Thursday when a former Trump spokesperson accused another panelist of insisting Republican lawmakers answer a “gotcha” question about the 2024 election.

Former Trump White House communications director Mike Dubke called out Reuters White House correspondent Jeff Mason for complaining that House Speaker Mike Johnson wouldn’t answer whether he would accept the results of the 2024 election. Host Kasie Hunt and former Biden administration official Kate Bedingfield disputed whether the question was a “set up.” (RELATED: ‘We Know Why It Was Canceled’: CNN Panel Pushes Back When Former Biden Admin Official Spins Called Off Press Briefing)

“I really have a problem with this question being asked over and over and over again of… of basically every Republican because it is a hypothetical,” Dubke said as a stunned Bedingfield interrupted by asking “Why?” twice, her voice rising the second time.

“We go back to 2020 and that is a… that is a different election,” Dubke added. “But in terms of this question being… being asked, I think it’s a set… frankly, I’m just saying it’s a set-up.”

Other panelists in the discussion appeared shocked by Dubke’s remarks.

Hunt and Bedingfield brought up the Jan. 6, 2021 riot at the Capitol building, arguing that Trump’s efforts to contest the 2020 election results made the question relevant.

“It wasn’t a question before there was a violent rally at the Capitol to try to overturn the results of a free and fair election,” Hunt claimed.

“Trump himself has subsequently said that he will not accept the results of the election,” Bedingfield added. “So I don’t know how that’s a hypothetical or a set up.”

Dubke didn’t back down despite Hunt and Bedingfield pressing him.

“I do think at least part of what I’m trying to express here is that there is a segment of the population that hears those questions, and then they… they feel like, well, this whole thing is a… is a set-up to try to is a gotcha question,” Dubke said. “That’s all I’m trying to say.”

“I just want to say, as someone who was at the Capitol on Jan. 6, I do not find these questions to be at all hypothetical!” Hunt shot back.
