House Democratic leaders have not discussed how the party would approach a possible motion to vacate against House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), according to Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY).
Democrats have not begun discussions on whether they’d back a motion to remove McCarthy or if they’d save their GOP counterpart from a possible ouster, and Jeffries emphasized it’s not currently a priority of party leaders.

“The motion-to-vacate question is a hypothetical one that’s not before us,” Jeffries told reporters on Tuesday. “We’ve had no discussion about it, and I don’t expect us to have any discussion about it.”
The comments come after Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) offered his strongest threat yet toward McCarthy’s leadership, warning the speaker he would call for a motion to vacate if he didn’t adhere to the commitments he made to House Republicans earlier this year. In a heated floor speech on Tuesday, Gaetz accused McCarthy of being “out of compliance” with the agreement that was brokered in exchange for support during the speakership elections in January, listing several demands he said have been unfulfilled.
“I rise today to serve notice, Mr. Speaker, that you are out of compliance with the agreement that allowed you to assume this role,” Gaetz said. “The path forward for the House of Representatives is to either bring you into immediate, total compliance or remove you pursuant to a motion to vacate the chair.”
Gaetz first raised the confidence vote over the weekend, threatening a motion if McCarthy didn’t approve an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, even going so far as to suggest he would extend a hand across the aisle and work with Democrats if it meant electing a new House leader.
A Biden impeachment inquiry also emerged as a top demand among some House Republicans who have threatened to withhold their support on any government spending legislation unless an investigation is opened.
McCarthy later announced on Tuesday he would greenlight an inquiry into the president and his son Hunter, directing the House Oversight, Judiciary, and Ways and Means committees to lead the effort.

Democrats denounced the move, calling the inquiry “illegitimate” and a move to cater to the demands of former President Donald Trump.
“This impeachment is based on no evidence of wrongdoing by President Biden. But it’s all the evidence we need to show Kevin McCarthy has lost control of the gavel,” said House Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D-MA). “He’s proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Republican Conference is controlled by conspiracy theorists, devoid of reasonable voices that are coming here to govern and solve problems. Donald Trump is the ultimate puppet master.”
