Joe Scarborough slams ‘media elites’ calling for Biden to step aside in 2024 – Washington Examiner

MSNBC’s Morning Joe co-host Joe Scarborough slammed the “media elites” for suggesting President Joe Biden step aside from the 2024 election, days after he claimed Biden would lose “unless there’s a change.”

Scarborough argued that he initially said Biden should consider dropping out after the debate, but at the same time people should give him “some time” to see what polling data would show in the ensuing days. He then claimed that Biden can now say that “media elites,” billionaires, and “Hollywood moguls” are in opposition to his reelection, and could appear strong by continuing his run despite his naysayers.

“So Biden allies, now, this is what they’re going to say, ‘Oh, wait a second, so you’re telling me that media elites and billionaire donors and Washington politicians and Washington [sic] moguls, they all think that they can substitute their judgment for the judgment of millions of Democratic primary voters?’” Scarborough said on MSNBC’s Morning Joe. “John Heilemann, it may happen. And this isn’t about what ought to be, this is about what is, and you know, Joe Biden has a fired up, angry Democratic base in parts, and he’s gotten a lot of elites putting him in a position where he can look strong, staring them down.”

Scarborough’s apparent about-face from his suggestion of Biden potentially dropping out comes after the president sent a letter to congressional Democrats to “come together” to beat former President Donald Trump in the November election. The letter also noted how there are discussions on how to move forward in the race, and that “it’s time for it to end,” potentially referencing the discussions of replacing him as the Democratic nominee.

Among those calling for Biden to step aside is Abigail Disney, the daughter of Disney co-founder Roy Disney. The Disney heir has long supported the Democratic Party financially but announced on Thursday that she would cease contributions unless Biden was replaced.

Post-debate polling data found that Biden has narrowed the gap between him and Trump, with the former president leading Biden by just 2 percentage points. Among swing states, Biden leads Trump in Michigan and Wisconsin, while Trump leads in Pennsylvania, Arizona, Georgia, and North Carolina.

On Sunday, a reported meeting by Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) among Senate Democrats to discuss Biden’s support ahead of the presidential election was called off. The plans for this “private” meeting were scrapped after the details became public, according to a report.
