RNC faces lackluster volunteer support as DNC recruits triple its numbers – Washington Examiner

While the Democratic National Convention highlights high numbers of people volunteering to work the event come August, the Republican National Convention currently has far fewer slated volunteers.

The DNC said it has had 12,000 people sign up since opening the volunteer portal in May, while the RNC currently has around 4,000 volunteers set to work the convention in Milwaukee next week.

Meanwhile, in Chicago, the DNC said 12,000 people volunteered to work the convention with 75% of the applications coming from Illinois and every Chicago ZIP code being represented by those who volunteered.

Two weeks ago, the DNC still needed 3,000 people to volunteer, but those slots have been filled ahead of the Democrats’ August convention.

The RNC previously had difficulty recruiting volunteers and was seeking 800 more volunteers as of June 4, according to Milwaukee Magazine

“Things are moving along. The big thing that we are focusing on is the final push to recruit volunteers,” Host Committee Chief Operating Officer Alison Prange said at the time.

When the portal to volunteer originally opened in March, the Republican National Committee said 6,000 volunteers would be needed for the event but lowered the threshold as the full-scale planning of the event came to be and the date drew closer.

Some business owners in Milwaukee have also expressed their discontent with the planning of the RNC as many event spaces and restaurants remain unbooked and unreserved.

“From an events standpoint, dining, private events, parties, shut-down-the-restaurant, etc., the convention has absolutely been a disappointment,” Cindi McLeod, spokeswoman for Lupi & Iris, a restaurant in Milwaukee, told the Recombobulation Area. “There are not as many inquiries as hoped, and in general terms, there is not a lot of excitement around the convention. I’m sad for Milwaukee. We really wanted this. We really wanted to shine. We were really excited to host these events.”

The RNC did not respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.
