Clooney’s call for Biden to quit draws backlash from celebrities – Washington Examiner

Hollywood megastar George Clooney has received backlash for suggesting in an op-ed published Wednesday that President Joe Biden should withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.

The Ocean’s Eleven and Gravity actor’s call for Biden to drop out comes only a few weeks after he hosted a fundraiser for the president’s campaign, which generated about $28 million. While many celebrities have spoken in agreement with Clooney’s assessment of the president, some have rebuked the actor for his about-face in support of Biden.

Among Clooney’s critics is comedian D.L. Hughley, who found Clooney’s op-ed to be “insulting.”

“And all of this hand-wringing, one of the reasons Democrats have problems ’cause they oftentimes are like feckless cowards,” Hughley told TMZ. “Cowards. Yeah, I understand what we’re up against, but we’ve had worse. But to have these conversations and not once mention the remedy, which you already have, is that a competent vice president who’s already leading in the poll would take over, is a false narrative.”

Barstool Sports owner Dave Portnoy has also rebuked Clooney for his op-ed, mockingly calling him “a f***ing hero” for pretending to be a hero by suddenly asking the president to step aside.

“And by the way, you just found out Biden was a vegetable three weeks ago?” Portnoy said in a video on X. “Where have you been for two years? Everyone knows he’s a f***ing vegetable. The guy can’t get on and off a stage without getting lost.”

Clooney’s op-ed has also drawn the attention of former President Donald Trump, the presumptive presidential nominee for the Republican Party. Trump harshly criticized the “fake movie actor” for suggesting Biden “saved our democracy,” and contended that he should stay out of politics.

Star Wars actor Mark Hamill has not directly criticized Clooney, though he did reply “done” to a post on X encouraging people to cancel their subscriptions to the New York Times, the paper that published Clooney’s op-ed. The actor has been a major advocate for Biden, even appearing at the White House earlier this year.

Late-night host Stephen Colbert has also mocked Clooney, jokingly calling him “our nation’s most powerful Democratic leader.” He noted how Clooney called for a new nominee for president, then joked that Clooney also called for “a money guy, a safe cracker, an acrobat, and Brad Pitt,” which were needed for a new movie called Ocean’s 24.

Despite Clooney’s criticism, many celebrities have spoken in favor of his call, including The Princess Bride director Rob Reiner, who argued Clooney “expressed what many of us have been saying.” Even prior to Clooney’s op-ed, several celebrities, including author Stephen King, requested Biden to step aside.

Ahead of the November election, Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) has stated that Biden is “behind Trump in all our polling” in Michigan, a major swing state in the Electoral College. Trump previously won it in 2016, though he lost it to Biden in 2020.
