What’s in your makeup? Luna spearheads paraben ban – Washington Examiner

EXCLUSIVE — Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) is spearheading legislation aimed at addressing the presence of harmful chemicals in cosmetics.

In an exclusive interview with the Washington Examiner, Luna discussed her proposed No Toxic Chemicals in Cosmetics Act, highlighting the dangers associated with parabens, a common ingredient in makeup.

“Big corporations are taking the cheapest approach to actually making people sick,” Luna said. “So, we have a higher rate of cancer, infertility, and autism now with young people.”

Parabens, known for their ability to extend the shelf life of cosmetics, are raising concerns due to their potential to disrupt hormonal balance and contribute to health problems. Luna expressed her concerns about corporate practices prioritizing cost over consumer safety, attributing rising health problems to such negligence.

The proposed bill seeks to amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to enforce stricter regulations on sunscreen and cosmetics containing parabens. Mainly targeting esters of parahydroxybenzoic acid, the legislation aims to ensure products posing risks to consumers are thoroughly checked before reaching the market.

“A lot of people are like, why are you focusing on this?” Luna said. “I’m doing this in addition to my other responsibilities, but this is something that is affecting all Americans, specifically young women and young men.”

Parabens are commonly found in sunscreen products as well. The No Toxic Chemicals in Cosmetics Act includes a section ensuring any drug incorporating one or more ingredients meant to absorb solar radiation fall under the regulation of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

The bill has been introduced to the House and referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce for review.
