Jill Biden spoke with Melania Trump after assassination attempt on former president – Washington Examiner

First lady Jill Biden reportedly spoke to former first lady Melania Trump on the phone in the wake of the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

Reports of the two women speaking surfaced Monday, though it’s not clear exactly what was said.

Relieved that her husband is safe, Melania Trump expressed in a statement Sunday that she is “grateful to the brave secret service agents and law enforcement officials who risked their lives” protecting him.

“When I watched that violent bullet strike my husband,” she said, “I realized my life, and Barron’s life, were on the brink of a devastating change.”

In a similar move, President Joe Biden phoned the former president shortly after the shooting. In an interview with the New York Post, Donald Trump described their conversation as “very nice.”

“I spoke with him last night, and I’m grateful he’s doing well,” Biden said during a national address Sunday. “Jill and I keep him and his family in our prayers.”

Trump, who was discharged from Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh on Saturday night, is more than grateful to be alive.

“I’m not supposed to be here,” he said. “I’m supposed to be dead.”

Both the former president and Biden seem to be in agreement about the need for unification and the dangers of political violence.

“Remember, while we may disagree, we are not enemies,” Biden said in his address. “We’re neighbors, we’re friends, coworkers, citizens, and most importantly, we are fellow Americans. We must stand together.”

Donald Trump echoed Biden’s sentiment shortly after, sharing a succinct message on Truth Social: “UNITE AMERICA!”

In addition to condemning such violence, both the former president and Biden have taken time to honor Corey Comperatore, a spectator at the rally who was killed.
