Milwaukee mayor says ‘things are going pretty well’ after first day of RNC – Washington Examiner

The mayor of Milwaukee appears to be pleased with how the Republican National Convention is moving forward after the first day of events.

Mayor Cavalier Johnson said Monday concluded without any major hiccups or incidents. During the first day of the RNC, former President Donald Trump was officially nominated as the Republican presidential candidate, and he tapped Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) to be his running mate.

“By my most important measures, things are going pretty well,” Johnson said at a Tuesday press conference. He also commended the work of “all of the partners who stepped up” in terms of safety around the convention, according to Urban Milwaukee.

Three arrests were made on the first day of the convention. The first was for disorderly conduct, the second person tried to climb a fence to get access to a restricted area, and the third arrest was of a driver who blocked traffic and refused to move at police officers’ request.

“Overall, it was a calm day, it was a peaceful day,” Johnson said. “Most importantly, no one was hurt.”

Johnson, a Democrat, still reiterated his support for the Democratic ticket.

“We now have a Republican candidate on the vice presidential side without any executive experience and a Republican presidential candidate whose executive experience we’ve already endured over the course of a term,” Johnson said. “President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris — they’ve got my support, and their time in office has been good for Wisconsin.”

Many of Biden’s efforts are marked throughout Milwaukee, including signs outside constriction sites that say the project was paid for by “President Joe Biden’s Infrastructure Law.”

“So when you listen to the words from the podium at Fiserv Forum, the podium at the Republican National Convention, be objective,” Johnson said. “What’s the spin? What’s real? Be informed and be a thoughtful voter.”
