Comedian Russell Brand assured his fans Friday that he denies the criminal allegations against him.

Brand took to X, formerly known as Twitter, before any news coverage or criminal charges had come out. Then, on Saturday, the Sunday Times published the allegations of anonymous women that Brand sexually and emotionally abused them. The comedian typically uses his X account to broadcast his talk show on which he interviews various celebrities on counter-culture subjects. This time, he captioned the video, which he acknowledged was out of the usual with the phrase: “This is happening.”

In various stand-up comedy performances and television interviews, Brand has long discussed his various addictions, including what he refers to as his sex addiction, which he implied the Times had “metastasized into something criminal.”

“I don’t mind them using my books and my stand-up to talk about my promiscuous consensual conduct in the past. What I seriously refute are these very, very serious criminal allegations,” Brand said. “The relationships that I had were absolutely always consensual. I was always transparent about that then, almost too transparent. And I’m being transparent about it now.”

The Times, the Sunday Times, and Channel 4 Dispatches cooperated on the investigation before the piece was published. They confirmed the four women do not know each other and all met Brand in various ways. One worked for him in Los Angeles, California, while another met him in his home. One of these victims says she was 16, and he was 31 when the alleged abuse happened.

All the alleged incidents happened between 2006 and 2013. The United Kingdom does not have a statute of limitations on rape as there is in the United States.

Brand went on to speculate that “coordinated media attacks” were a long time coming. He pointed to the example of fellow comedian Joe Rogan, who was hit by a barrage of reporting after he discussed on his podcast how he treated his coronavirus diagnosis on his own.
