Montana residents have 13 days to apply for a property tax rebate of up to $675 before the deadline.

The property tax rebate can be applied for either through the online portal set up by the state or by paper form. The deadline is Oct. 1.

“Property taxes are too high, which is why we prioritized and secured immediate property tax relief for Montanans this legislative session. Now, it’s time to build on reforms to reduce the burden of property taxes over the long term,” Gov. Greg Gianforte (R-MT) said in a statement about the program.

Rebates are sent within 30 days of filing the application through the online portal or up to 90 days after submitting a paper application.

Montana taxpayers must have owned and lived in a residence in the state for at least seven months to qualify for the rebate. Another requirement for the rebate includes having been billed and having paid for the property taxes on the residence in tax year 2022.

The rebate amount is equal to the amount paid in property taxes for a taxpayer’s “principal Montana residence,” and there is a limit of $675 for the rebate payment. The state says each property can be used for one tax rebate.

A similar rebate program for 2024, based on tax year 2023, was passed by state lawmakers when the 2023 program was approved. Montana will send out rebates to eligible residents on an identical basis next year.
