FACT CHECK: Did Donald Trump Say He Doesn’t Speak To JD Vance?

A post shared on X claimed former President Donald Trump said “I don’t even talk to JD Vance.”

“I don’t even talk to JD Vance” – Trump

He really said that.

Verdict: False

The post misquotes a statement Trump made during the most recent debate. Trump said that he did not discuss the topic at hand with his running mate, not that he doesn’t speak to him at all.

Fact Check:

Some members of the GOP Senate expressed their displeasure with Trump’s debate performance, one anonymous Republican senator suggesting that the debate highlighted his “lack of discipline,” according to The Hill. Others, such as Republican Oklahoma Sen. James Lankford took issue with the moderators, saying Vice President Harris was not fact-checked, the outlet reported.

An X post suggests that Trump does not speak with his running mate JD Vance at all.

“‘I don’t even talk to JD Vance’ – Trump,” the post reasd. “He really said that.”

This post is inaccurate, however, and misquotes a statement made during the Sep. 10 debate. The part the post is most likely referring to is when a moderator asked Trump if he would veto an abortion bill, saying that running mate JD Vance previously made this statement. It is true that Vance said this, according to PBS

A Trump spokesperson referred Check Your Fact to an ABC News transcript via email, which shows that Trump said, “Well, I didn’t discuss it with JD In all fairness. JD — And I don’t mind if he has a certain view but I think he was speaking for me but I really didn’t.”

MSNBC made an X post highlighting this specific clip from the debate. (RELATED: Fact-Checking The First Debate Between Donald Trump And Kamala Harris)

“I didn’t discuss it with JD, in all fairness…. I don’t mind if he has a certain view.”
