FACT CHECK: Did Kamala Harris Lie About Owning a Firearm?

A viral post shared on X claims Vice President Kamala Harris lied about owning a firearm during an interview with CNN.

Verdict: Misleading

The post refers to an error within the CNN transcript and closed-captions. Harris does own a firearm.

Fact Check:

During an interview with former talk show host Oprah Winfrey, Harris remarked that anyone who broke into her home would ‘get shot,’ according to BBC. The statement came during a discussion on gun control, where the vice president reiterated that she would not ‘take everyone’s guns away’ should she become president, USA Today reported.

The post claims that Harris’ campaign spokesperson, Adrienne Elrod, confirmed on a CNN interview that the vice president did not own a firearm. Kamala Harris lied about owning a gun to the entire country and she lied about her position on gun confiscation,” the caption reads in part.

The claim is false. The statement is referring to a CNN transcript and includes videos with auto-captions, suggesting that Harris does not own a gun, despite claiming she does. (RELATED: Trump Claims Harris Campaign Illegally Spied On Him)

The official CNN transcript, however, confirms Harris does own a firearm, with Elrod stating “She supports strong Responsible gun ownership and she does own a firearm.” The confusion appears to stem from an auto-captioning error in the video shared online.

Harris’s firearm ownership is also documented. The vice president reportedly purchased a small firearm years ago, and referred to it during her 2019 campaign for president, according to The Associated Press. A campaign associate told CNN that the firearm is “stored inside her home in Los Angeles” and could “fit in a small purse.”

This is not the first time claims regarding Harris’ record and claims have been misconstrued. Check Your Fact recently debunked a claim stating professors from Howard University had claimed the vice president was “the worst student ever.”
