A post made on Facebook claims that Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump proposed a ‘purge.’
The uploaded video is a modification of the original speech footage. The former president made no mention of the word ‘purge’ in his speech.
Fact Check:
A post made on Facebook claims that Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump proposed a ‘purge’ during his remarks at a September 29 campaign rally in Erie, Pennsylvania. The caption reads, “DONALD TRUMP: PROPOSING A PURGE?!!!” Text overlay on the video included with the post reads, “Did Donald Trump just suggest The Purge?”
The claim is false. The former president made no mention of the word ‘purge’ in his nearly two-hour speech. The claim appears to be an exaggeration of a line in Trump’s remarks that reads, “One rough hour. And I mean real rough, the world will get it out and it will end immediately. End immediately. You know, it will end immediately.” (RELATED: Fact-Checking Trump’s RNC Speech)
The video included with the Facebook post was originally posted to Instagram. The video includes a clip of Trump’s speech followed by an ’emergency broadcast system’ announcing ‘commencement of the Annual Purge.’ The video was edited to include the ’emergency broadcast system’—which was used in the production of horror movie ‘The Purge.’
The claim may have originated from a slew of sarcastic comments made on late-night television. Late-night show host Jimmy Fallon stated, “Good news: He stopped talking about Hannibal Lecter. Bad news: He suggested we do ‘The Purge’ instead.”
