UAW strike: Schumer joins picketers in New York: ‘Gonna fight until we win’

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) joined picketers striking against the three major automakers in Tappan, New York, Tuesday. His support came as the strike continued into its second week.

Schumer vowed to support the union workers, who were part of the United Auto Workers union, until they received the support they needed from General Motors, Ford Motor Company, and Stellantis.

“We’re gonna fight until we win,” Schumer said in a video posted to the UAW’s account on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. “My father, who was a union guy, taught me … when you’re doing the right thing, when you’re doing something important, look in your heart, make sure it’s the right thing. And then, if you persist and persist and persist, God will reward you and you will succeed. We are going to persist, and we are going to succeed.”

Schumer’s appearance came on the same day President Joe Biden met with union members in Michigan. Former President Donald Trump is expected to meet with the strikers in Detroit on Wednesday instead of attending the second Republican debate in Simi Valley, California.

“The fact of the matter is you guys, UAW, you saved the automobile industry back in 2008. You’ve made a lot of sacrifices. You gave up a lot when the companies were in trouble. But now they’re doing incredibly well and guess what? You should be doing incredibly well too,” Biden told the crowd. “Folks, stick with it. You deserve the significant raise you need and other benefits. Let’s get back what we lost. We saved them, and it’s about time they step up for us.”

The 13,000 employees who went on strike earlier this month are seeking several changes to workers’ contracts, including a 40% pay bump over the next four years. The biggest strikes are occurring in Michigan, Missouri, and Ohio.
