FACT CHECK: Are Some Electronic Voting Machines Leaving Donald Trump Off The Ballot?

A post on X claims to show a ballot in the 2024 election without Donald Trump’s name on it, implying that he was left off completely.

Verdict: False

The ballot is listed in alphabetical order. Trump’s name is further down on the ballot itself.

Fact Check:

The 2024 Presidential Election will occur Nov. 5, with the race between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris being characterized as too close to call per recent polling, according to Bloomberg. At the same time, a wave of election fraud claims have appeared on social media, BBC reported.

A photo being shared on X claims that a Kentucky voter was unable to vote for Donald Trump because he was not on the ballot. He shows a phone camera’s photo of an electronic voting machine that has four different candidates but not Donald Trump, and the post states “Voting machines not even letting you select Donald Trump and somehow, on some of these machines, Donald Trump isn’t even on the ballot.”

That text is misleading, however. If the voter had touched the “more” option under the Stein/Rudolph Ware ticket, they would have seen the Trump/Vance option and had been able to vote for it.  Some states list candidates in alphabetical order, and “Trump” comes naturally after the other four tickets, which are headed by Harris, Robert F. Kennedy, Chase Oliver and Jill Stein.

According to Newsweek, this post originated from a voter in California angry that all candidates are not listed on the same page. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) reposted it, adding that Kennedy is still on the ballot despite dropping out months ago.

California utilizes a “randomized alphabet” approach to listing candidates, as they perform a random drawing of letters 82 days before an election to determine the order on the ballot.
