South Dakota governor tells California gunmakers and owners to ‘make the move’ to her state

Gov. Kristi Noem (R-SD) took aim at Gov. Gavin Newsom’s (D-CA) signing of gun control measures to raise taxes on guns and ammunition by encouraging Golden State gun makers and gun owners to “make the move” to South Dakota.

“Why live in a state where your 2nd Amendment rights are infringed? South Dakota’s firearms industry is thriving. If you’re a California gun manufacturer or law-abiding gun owner, @SDGOED is ready to help you make the move!” Noem said on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Noem has been on an active marketing push for workers to come to South Dakota for jobs.

Her social media post on Wednesday was in response to the California governor’s signing of a law on Tuesday to double taxes on guns and ammunition, making the state the only state to have a special tax on gun purchases. The new law, AB28, is adding an 11% excise tax on top of the federal government’s excise taxes of around 10%.

Newsom said he plans to use the tax revenue to invest in “gun violence prevention” and to improve security at schools.

The California Democrat also signed a law limiting where concealed weapons can be carried in public, which is an overhaul of the state’s rules for carrying concealed weapons.

Earlier this month, Noem endorsed former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Rapid City, South Dakota.

“You’ve made America Great Again once, let’s do it again,” Noem said at the rally on Sept. 8.

Noem has been floated as a running mate for Trump and has said she would consider being vice president if asked.

“I get endorsements, some good, some bad,” Trump said at the South Dakota rally. “Some don’t mean anything. Hers means a lot.”

Newsom has also been floated as a Democratic contender in the 2024 election if President Joe Biden bows out of the running. Thursday marks the first public congressional hearing for House Republicans in their impeachment inquiry into Biden to be held by the House Oversight and Accountability Committee.
