Trump plans to debate Biden ahead of 2024 election, but Biden hasn’t committed

Former President Donald Trump appears to be planning to debate President Joe Biden ahead of the presidential election if he is the Republican nominee, despite not participating in the primary debates. Biden notably hasn’t signaled the same willingness.

After the second Republican primary debate Wednesday, a senior adviser for Trump called on the Republican National Committee to cancel future primary debates, noting that the former president continues to loom large over opponents in polls.

In a Thursday post, Trump senior adviser Chris LaCivita made it clear that he intends to be the nominee and also plans to take on Biden in debates before the presidential election in 2024. His intention to debate ahead of a presidential contest was uncertain after he opted to skip the primary debates.

“Dont worry @JoeBiden….you will get your chance to Debate @realDonaldTrump ….counting down the days,” LaCivita posted to X, responding to the president.

Biden had written “Couldn’t agree more,” linking to a video of Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) calling Trump out at the debate for adding just under $8 trillion to the national debt during his term.

The president, though, may not be interested in debating Trump if he is the Republican nominee in 2024.

Biden’s reelection campaign was unwilling to say whether he planned to debate with Trump, should he be the nominee, before the presidential election. “We haven’t had any real substantive conversations about that quite yet,” his campaign told reporters last month when asked about general election debates with Trump.

The campaign did not provide comment to the Washington Examiner when asked if this had changed.

Following Trump’s decision not to participate in the first Republican debate, he faced criticism from those who claimed the move gave Biden an excuse not to debate him. “You are giving Joe Biden a card to say, ‘I’m going to use the Trump debate standard and not show up because I’m so ahead in my internal polls. I’m just not coming,’ so you’re giving a card to your opponent that he could pull if he tried,” former White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said at the time.
