Impeachment inquiry: GOP subpoenas personal bank records of Hunter and James Biden

House Republicans announced Thursday they subpoenaed three banks for records of President Joe Biden‘s son Hunter and brother James, marking the first time the GOP has issued legal orders for broad personal financial information of the president’s immediate family members.
The subpoenas, signed by House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY), requested both personal and business bank records of Hunter and James Biden, as well as records of Eric Schwerin, Hunter Biden’s former business partner.

The subpoenas were published by Oversight and were redacted. They noted the recipients of the subpoenas, who a source familiar confirmed were three separate banks, would need to provide the requested information by Oct. 12.
The wide-ranging material Comer asked for included the following for Hunter Biden, James Biden, Schwerin, and several affiliated entities:
- Account statements
- Correspondent bank records
- Deposits
- Direct deposits
- Checks
- Cashier checks
- Wire transfers
- Electronic transfer payments
- Credit card and debit card records
- Loan documents and supporting documentation
- All records regarding the opening of the accounts
- Signature cards
- Copies of identification presented by the account holder or any other signatory
- Account closing documents
- “Know your client” and due diligence documents
Cover letters accompanying the subpoenas were signed by both Comer and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH).
“The Committees are concerned that Hunter Biden and other Biden family members sought to conceal the source of foreign income by having lucrative wires sent to Biden associates’ accounts instead of their own bank accounts at [redacted] and elsewhere,” the chairmen wrote. “We believe these records will provide insight as to where the foreign money was finally sent.”
Comer first previewed he would issue the subpoenas last week, soon after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) verbally launched an impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden over allegations he abused his authority as vice president for personal financial gain.
Comer, who has for months been leading the investigation into the allegations against Joe Biden, has subpoenaed several banks and received thousands of bank records in response, but he has not at this stage demonstrated direct payments were made to Joe Biden as a result of his son’s foreign business ventures.
“From day one of our investigation of Joe Biden’s abuse of public office, we’ve followed the money and that continues with today’s subpoenas,” Comer said in a statement.

He added, “Bank records don’t lie, and coupled with witness testimony, they reveal that Joe Biden abused his public office for his family’s financial gain.”
Neither the White House nor Hunter Biden’s attorney Abbe Lowell provided comment.
