Biden calls on House Republicans to elect a new speaker ‘quickly’

President Joe Biden implored House Republicans to elect a new speaker after Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was pushed out of the post.

“President Biden has demonstrated that he is always eager to work with both parties in Congress in good faith on behalf of the American people,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Tuesday in a statement. “Because the urgent challenges facing our nation will not wait, he hopes the House will quickly elect a speaker.”

“The American people deserve leadership that puts the issues affecting their lives front and center, as President Biden did today with more historic action to lower prescription drug prices,” she added. “Once the House has met their responsibility to elect a speaker, he looks forward to working together with them and with the Senate to address the American people’s priorities.”

The White House’s statement did not mention McCarthy after a small number of Republicans, led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), and Democrats ousted him in a 216–210 vote through a parliamentary procedure called a motion to vacate, which has been only been used three times in the country’s history. McCarthy agreed to change House rules when he was elected speaker in January after 15 ballots so a single member of the chamber could introduce the motion. Gaetz did so this week after McCarthy dealt with Democrats to keep the government open last weekend.

The House cannot conduct business without a speaker.

“That is something that they need to figure out, how they are going to fix that,” Jean-Pierre said earlier Tuesday. “That is something I believe that the American people want to continue to see that bipartisanship.”
