Germany’s Failed Far-Left Chancellor Bemoans ‘Bitter Result’ After AfD Make Record Gains — Says Country ‘Must Never Accept’ a Right-Wing Government

The center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) looks set to win power in Germany.

An exit poll released at 6 p.m. local time found that the CDU party is expected to be the largest party in the next German parliament, at about 29 percent of the vote.

This means that their leader, Friedrich Merz, will almost certainly become Germany’s next chancellor.

Meanwhile, the Alternative for Germany (AFD) is expected to come second, winning a record-high percentage of the vote, almost doubling showing of 10.4 percent back in 2021.

The incumbent Social Democratic Party (SPD) is projected to come third with a dismal 16 percent, its worst-ever result in a federal election.

Outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz described the poll as a “bitter result,” adding that the rise of right-wing populist parties such as the AfD is something “we must never accept.”

“This is a bitter election result for the Social Democratic Party, it is also an electoral defeat,” he said.

“I think we can be proud of the fact that we have worked together so closely in difficult times.”

The far-left Linke Party also looks to have made significant gains, surging to 8.5 percent of the total vote share.

While the result means that the AfD will become power brokers in the German Bundestag, they are unlikely to be able to form a government due to the refusal of establishment parties to work with them.

Elon Musk has publicly expressed his support for the AfD and even gave a video address at their conference.

Meanwhile, Vice-President J.D. Vance met with some of the party’s leadership during his recent visit to the Munich Security Conference.

The run-up to the election campaign had also been marred by numerous Islamist attacks, raising fears among the establishment that this would benefit the AfD electorally.
