Biden and Trump neck and neck as majorities say they don’t want either: Poll

Former President Donald Trump trails President Joe Biden by just two percentage points in a hypothetical 2024 presidential election match-up, but majorities of voters said they didn’t want either to be president.

In a new NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist national poll, 49% of registered voters said they would support Biden if the presidential election were held today, while 47% opted for Trump. This is consistent with other national and state polling, which have similarly depicted the two men as being practically tied and within the margin of error.

While Biden and Trump lead their respective parties’ primary fields by wide margins and appear likely to engage in a rematch of the 2020 election in 2024, registered voters indicated that they don’t want to see either as president again.

According to the poll, 65% said they don’t want Biden to serve another term and nearly the same amount, 60%, reported not wanting Trump to be president.

The survey further revealed that nearly half, 49%, of registered voters believe Trump did something illegal, as he faces indictments in four different cases. Twenty-six percent said they think Trump has done something unethical but not illegal. Despite this, a third of voters want Trump to be president again, including two-thirds of Republicans.

Fewer registered voters believe Biden has done something illegal, with just over one-third, 38%, saying so. A quarter indicated that they believe he has done something that is unethical but not illegal, specifically as it relates to Hunter Biden’s business dealings.

Additionally, more than half of voters don’t support House Republicans initiating an impeachment inquiry into Biden.

More registered voters believe Hunter Biden has done something illegal than either Trump or Biden. Half reported believing that Hunter Biden’s actions were illegal, one percent more than Trump. More than one-third said he did something unethical but not illegal.

In previous surveys, the majority of respondents have indicated concerns over Biden and Trump’s ages, which are 80 and 77, respectively. However, they indicated being significantly more concerned about Biden’s age and cognitive health.

Despite these concerns, the men remain nearly tied across the board, including in key battleground states such as Pennsylvania. In a new poll of Pennsylvania, Trump defeats Biden by just two percentage points, 47% to 45%, once again within the margin of error.
