Former Rep. Mia Love’s death Sunday prompted a swarm of condolences to her family from her former coworkers on Capitol Hill.
Love, 49, who had been battling brain cancer since 2022, was the first black Republican woman to serve in the House of Representatives.
Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) said on X that Love’s death “leaves a deep, painful void.”
“Please join me in praying for the Love family and remembering Mia Love as a friend, trailblazer, congresswoman, wife, mother, and patriot,” Lee wrote. “May she rest in peace, and may the great things she worked for in this life inspire the people of Utah—and all Americans—to better serve each other, our families, and our country.”

“Mia’s legacy is one of faithful service and dedication to our nation and those she loved,” Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) wrote. “May the Lord draw near and comfort her family and friends in the days ahead.”

“As the first Black Republican woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, Mia’s legacy of courage, leadership, and unwavering dedication to her community will forever be remembered. Her contributions to public service and her commitment to uplifting others have left an indelible mark on this nation,” the Black Conservative Federation wrote. “Our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time. She will be greatly missed.”

Former politicians also issued statements on Love’s behalf. Among them was former Rep. Paul Ryan, the Speaker of the House during Love’s time in Congress.
“Mia Love’s journey, growing up as the child of Haitian immigrants to serving in Congress, was one of a kind. @MiaBLove was committed to bettering the world around her & blazed an amazing trail for others to follow,” Ryan wrote. “Mia was a great friend & colleague. She will truly be missed.”

“Her energy, enthusiasm and wit made her a stand-out member of Congress. Her faith and fortitude made her a model for me and for countless others,” former Sen. Mitt Romney wrote of Love. “We will dearly miss you, Mia.”

In the final days of her life, Love penned a series of X posts and an opinion editorial encouraging others “to find and raise their voice.” It echoed the sentiment of her 2023 book Qualified: Finding Your Voice, Leading with Character, and Empowering Others.

FORMER REPUBLICAN CONGRESSWOMAN MIA LOVE DIES AFTER BRAIN CANCER BATTLE
“Raising dreamers and helping others learn to lead themselves is really the test for all of us. Such a commitment to raise and lead, changes children, transforms communities and empowers nations,” Love wrote.
Love is survived by her husband Jason and their three children, Alessa, Abigale, and Peyton.
