Beshear holds large lead over Cameron as Kentucky gubernatorial election nears: Poll

With just one month until the Kentucky gubernatorial election, Gov. Andy Beshear (D-KY) holds a significant lead over his Republican opponent, state Attorney General Daniel Cameron.

An independent survey from Emerson College Polling and Fox 56 Lexington showed 49% of Kentucky voters would vote for the Democratic incumbent, and it had Cameron sitting at 33%. The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.6 points.

Various polls released this summer consistently show Beshear in the lead, usually by double digits. This week, a poll commissioned by the Club for Growth PAC, which has endorsed Cameron, showed Beshear was leading his Republican rival by only 6 points. In May, Cameron’s campaign released its first post-primary general election poll, showing the competitors in a near tie.

A Cameron campaign spokesman, Sean Southard, questioned the latest Emerson polling accuracy, noting the polling was off by 15 points before the Kentucky primary election.

“You may recall that Emerson was off by 15 points right before the primary, having Cameron at 33, and he ended up at 48,” Southard told the Washington Examiner. “Daniel Cameron will win Nov. 7. Kentuckians are tired of the Biden/Beshear agenda that has given them record-high inflation, rising crime, and an open southern border. The Club poll, which was released earlier this week, still has Beshear under 50.”

Both campaigns have fueled the heated race by releasing dueling ads attacking each other’s abortion stances and the statewide near-total ban, campaign finances, and other local scandals. On Thursday, Bluegrass Freedom Action, a Cameron-aligned group, released an ad linking Beshear to President Joe Biden and highlighting inflation numbers and crime rates.

The candidates have been battling for endorsements from prominent groups, with Cameron securing support from the state’s largest police union in August. The Kentucky State Fraternal Order of Police, which backed Cameron in August, previously backed Beshear for governor in 2019 while also supporting Cameron to take Beshear’s then-role as the state’s attorney general. In June, a coalition of dozens of law officials, called Law Enforcement for Andy Beshear, endorsed Beshear. This week, the National Rifle Association issued its endorsement to Cameron.
