National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby appeared to break down emotionally Monday discussing the human rights atrocities taking place against women and children in Israel.

“The images that we’re seeing of children kidnapped, of young women who have been abducted, who have blood in their pants because they’ve, presumably, been repeatedly raped,” CNN’s Jake Tapper detailed to a listening Kirby.

“It’s horrifying. … There’s been a lot of death and destruction in that region, but I’ve never seen anything like this,” he added.

After hearing this, Kirby took a moment and appeared to try and compose himself before offering a response.

“I…uh…I…It…Sorry, it’s very…excuse me…very difficult to look at the images, Jake,” he said. “The human cost, and these are human beings. They are family members, they are friends, they are loved ones … cousins, brothers, sisters.”

“Yeah, it’s difficult, and I apologize,” Kirby added.

“Nothing to say sorry for,” Tapper replied.
