At least one suspect related to a Saturday California smash-and-grab robbery that saw a store employee open fire on thieves has been taken into custody, authorities said.

The crime occurred at about 12:40 p.m. at Prestige Jewelers in Manhattan Beach.

WHAT IS HAMAS, AND WHO IS THE COMMANDER KNOWN AS ‘THE GUEST’ BEHIND THE TERROR ATTACK ON ISRAEL?

“Five suspects, who were described as wearing hooded sweatshirts, used hammers to smash the jewelry showcases,” a Manhattan Beach Police Department statement read. “An employee of the store responded by using a firearm to shoot towards the suspects.”

After the employee opened fire, the robbers fled the scene.

While no injuries were reported, authorities did not confirm a suspect in custody until Monday, according to a report.

“This swift arrest should reassure the community that we have the most dedicated law enforcement agency and partners ensuring the safety of our community,” Manhattan Beach Mayor Richard Montgomery said in a statement.

“We must remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Together, we will continue working to keep Manhattan Beach a safe and thriving place for everyone.”

The arrest was made possible through cooperation with the Gardena Police Department, according to Manhattan Beach Police Chief Rachel Johnson.

“The Manhattan Beach Police Department and our surrounding agency partners worked tirelessly to follow leads, and gather evidence,” Johnson said. “We are grateful for the support and cooperation of the community in providing information that aided in the investigation in this case. We will continue to chase down leads, and will leave no stone unturned until this case is fully brought to resolution.”
