Nancy Mace dons ‘scarlet letter’ as she heads into speaker candidate forum

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) donned a “scarlet letter” as she headed into a House speaker candidate forum.

Mace wore a large red “A” on her shirt, which she said was her “scarlet letter.” This is in reference to the famous novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne, set in Puritan Massachusetts, in which the protagonist is forced to wear a scarlet letter “A,” for adultery, on her clothes after being charged with the practice.

Mace doesn’t appear to be admitting to adultery, instead appearing to be rebuking the backlash she received for voting to oust former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).

“After being demonized for using my voice and my vote last week, I don’t answer to Washington. I answer to the people. And no matter what D.C. insiders throw at me, I will always be for the people,” Mace told the Washington Examiner.

At the Tuesday meeting, House Republicans will hear from the two candidates to replace McCarthy as House speaker: Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA).

Mace has said previously that she plans to support Jordan.
