Israel war: Rashida Tlaib faces censure call from Jack Bergman after comments on Hamas terrorist attack

Rep. Jack Bergman (R-MI) has introduced a resolution to censure Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) for her past antisemitic remarks, as well as her latest statement after the fatal Hamas terrorist attacks against Israel.

“I just introduced a resolution to censure congresswoman Rashida Tlaib of Michigan,” he said in a video posted to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “I don’t take this action lightly. But her long-standing history of antisemitic and racist rhetoric towards Israel cannot go unchecked.”

Following the initial terrorist attack on Saturday, Tlaib, who is of Palestinian descent, issued a statement in which she referred to Israel’s existence as an “occupation,” further saying “the apartheid system” needs to be dismantled.

“The failure to recognize the violent reality of living under siege, occupation, and apartheid makes no one safer,” she said.

“As long as our country provides billions in unconditional funding to support the apartheid government, this heartbreaking cycle of violence will continue,” she said, urging Congress to stop funding Israel.

Bergman slammed Tlaib for the response, saying, “I’d hoped we can all agree that the terrorists raping women, murdering festivalgoers, and decapitating babies is a crime against all of humanity. And we must be able to call out that kind of unbridled evil in our world.”

In the resolution introduced by the Michigan Republican, he cited, “One day after a series of coordinated attacks on Israel perpetrated by Hamas terrorists and leaving more Jews dead than any single day since the Holocaust, congresswoman Tlaib issued a statement calling Israel an apartheid state and insinuating the United States should end its support for the State of Israel.”

The resolution would censure Tlaib, reaffirm that the House “stands with the State of Israel and rejects antisemitism,” and “renounces fringe beliefs that the State of Israel is an apartheid State.”

When responding to the censure resolution and reporter questions on Wednesday, Tlaib said, “I’m the only Palestinian voice right now in Congress.”

“If anything, my voice is needed here more than ever. This is an attempt to silence my voice because I want violence to stop, no matter whether it’s toward Israelis or toward Palestinians. Much of what I’m hearing from Jack and a number of other colleagues is rooted in bigotry, that somehow, because of my ethnicity and my faith, that I support terrorism.”
