Georgia taxpayers who got an extension on the filing deadline for their income taxes for 2022 have four days to file their tax returns to be eligible for a tax rebate in the Peach State of up to $500.

Some residents in the state who were affected by severe storms earlier this year were granted an extension of roughly six months by the IRS, meaning they must file their taxes for 2022 by Oct. 16. Most residents in the state filed their taxes by the regular April deadline and received their tax rebate shortly after.

The amount a taxpayer receives from the rebate is dependent on his or her filing status and tax liability, with different maximum amounts for single and joint filers, along with heads of households. For single filers, the rebate is worth as much as $250, and for the heads of households, it is worth as much as $375. Joint filers, meanwhile, can receive a rebate of up to $500.

“Georgia is once again in a position to issue surplus tax refunds thanks to years of responsible, conservative budgeting and because we chose to protect both lives and livelihoods during the pandemic,” Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA) said in a statement about the rebate.

“While failed policies coming out of Washington, D.C., are pushing us closer to a recession and forcing hardworking Georgians to endure sky-high inflation, we on the state level are doing what we can to return money back where it belongs — in taxpayers’s hands,” he continued.

Taxpayers must have filed their income tax returns for 2021 and 2022, had a tax liability in 2021, and be a “Georgia resident, part-year resident, or nonresident” to qualify for the rebate, according to the state.
