Stimulus update: Deadline to file taxes for rebate of up to $400 in Virginia coming in weeks

Residents in the commonwealth of Virginia have only weeks to file their 2022 state income taxes to qualify for a tax rebate of up to $400.

Taxpayers in the Old Dominion who have not filed their 2022 taxes have until Nov. 1, the extension date from the May 1 deadline, to qualify for the rebate being sent out in Virginia.

The timetable for when the rebates will be issued to taxpayers (as well as taxpayer-specific eligibility information) is unavailable but will be revealed later, according to the Virginia Department of Taxation.

The state says the rebates will be worth up to $200 for individual filers and up to $400 for joint filers. While the state said not all taxpayers in Virginia would be eligible for the rebate, it did say that those with a tax liability are among those who will be eligible.

The latest round of tax rebates was approved as part of Virginia’s annual budget, which Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) signed into law in September. This set of tax rebates comes a year after Virginians received tax rebates of up to $500 in 2022.

“This budget is the result of what we can accomplish when we put politics down and choose conservative commonsense solutions and make critical investments to ensure Virginia is the best state to live, work, and raise a family,” Youngkin said. “I’m proud that we’re delivering on our promises to our veterans, our families, and fellow Virginians to lower the cost of living by providing an additional one billion dollars in tax relief on top of last year’s historic four billion dollars.”

The Virginia governor also touted $1 billion in tax cuts as part of the state’s annual budget, saying he signed $5 billion in tax cuts since taking office in January 2022.
