At least three deputies were reportedly killed in an apparent explosion at a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) training facility Friday.
The explosion is thought to have happened at the Biscailuz Center Training Academy in East L.A. at approximately 7:30 a.m., NBC Los Angeles reported. The agency’s Enforcement Bureau was believed to be working with some explosive devices when the blast occurred, sources told ABC 7. The blast reportedly killed at least three sheriff’s deputies and is suspected of being an accident. (RELATED: FBI Investigating Fatal California Fertility Clinic Explosion As Act of Terrorism)
LA County Supervisor Kathryn Barger said in a statement to NBC Los Angeles that she was “heartbroken” over the incident.
“I am closely tracking the situation as we learn more about what occurred and the condition of those affected,” Barger said, according to NBC LA. “My heart is heavy, and my thoughts are with the brave men and women of the Sheriff’s Department during this difficult time. I stand with them and their families as they navigate the hours and days ahead.”
It is unknown whether there were additional injuries, according to ABC 7.
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi also released several statements on the social media platform X. The AG announced that she was in touch with local law enforcement and had spoken with U.S Attorney for the Central District of California Bill Essayli. Bondi said the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were at the scene.
