Group Gets Swept Up In Waterfall, Killing 1 While Several Others Go Missing

One person was killed and two people remain missing after a group of people was swept up in a waterfall near Bend, Oregon, Saturday.

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) responded to a report of six individuals going over Dillon Falls on the Deschutes River, the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook press release. Three people were rescued and transported to a local hospital, officials said.

One person was confirmed dead at the scene and two others are unaccounted for, prompting additional searches.

Search and rescue efforts continued into Sunday morning. The sheriff’s office said they deployed drones to search the Dillon Falls area and worked alongside swiftwater rescue team members, according to another Facebook statement.

Authorities also used three K9 teams to assist in the search in addition to marine patrol boats.

“Recovery efforts will continue on Monday,” the DCSO said. (RELATED: Video Captures Car In India With Little Girl In It Falling Into Waterfall. Dad Who Can’t Swim Jumps In To Rescue Her)

The names of the individuals involved and the details of how they were swept up in the waterfall were not immediately released by officials.

Dillon Falls, one of many waterfalls in central Oregon, is open year-round and home to “a series of quick-drop rapids in the Deschutes River,” according to VisitCentralOregon. An area overlooking the fall has a 15-foot drop that “almost immediately turns into churning rapids in a quick, step ladder-like pattern.”

A 16-year-old died in 2023 after jumping into a waterfall in upstate New York, officials said in a press release. The incident occurred at the base of the waterfalls at Fawn’s Leap, a 24-foot high waterfall in the Catskill Mountains.

“[T]he victim had jumped off the ledge at the top of the falls with another friend. Both landed in the water near the south side of the base of the falls where the hydraulic current caused by the waterfall was too strong for them to swim out of,” the Athens Volunteer Fire Department said.

A bystander was able to rescue the victim’s friend but was unable to help the victim, authorities said. The teen was recovered by divers and pronounced dead at the scene.
