The father of slain New York police officer Didarul Islam had a stroke when he learned of his son’s passing Monday, a relative told the New York Post.
Islam’s father — who was not identified — did not feel well upon learning the news and had a stroke, according to a cousin, Muhammad Mainul Islam, the New York Post reported. Islam said Officer Islam’s father was not released from the hospital.
“His father went last night to see him. When he heard the message, he had a stroke, feeling bad. So he had a stroke so the hospital did not release him,” Muhammad Mainul Islam explained to the New York Post.
Police Officer Didarul Islam represented the very best of our department.

The officer’s cousin also said the whole family, including Islam’s wife, is saddened by his death.
“They are all crying. There is no brother — only him. The family is really feeling a big problem. His wife had the doctor’s appointment. I heard one police officer from the precinct, she took [her] to the hospital,” he added. (RELATED: Officials ID NYC Gunman, Confirm Slain Officer Among Victims)
Officer Didarul Islam was an immigrant from Bangladesh assigned to the 47th precinct, according to ABC 7 NY. He had three and a half years on the police force and was off-duty, working a private security detail assignment when Shane Tamura opened fire on a Park Avenue building in Manhattan. Islam was wearing his uniform, which included a bulletproof vest, at the time of the incident, ABC 7 NY reported. Islam is survived by his pregnant wife and two young children.
Twenty-seven-year-old Tamura traveled from Las Vegas to New York and is believed to have targeted the National Football League (NFL) headquarters, which is housed inside the building. Tamura reportedly left a note referencing the NFL and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) following the incident.
While Tamura has no apparent link to the NFL, he did play football in high school. Police have also not found any evidence suggesting Tamura suffered from CTE, despite him allegedly asking for his brain to be studied in the note he left behind.
A total of four people were killed before the gunman turned the weapon on himself, CNN reported.
