Dinosaur Footprints Discovered After Massive Flooding

From a flood to a dinosaur discovery — it’s absolutely incredible what nature can bring.

After massive flooding struck Northwest Travis County, Texas, 115 million-year-old dinosaur footprints were discovered in the area. The discovery was a result of the flooding sweeping away brush and sediment layers that had been hiding them, per officials.

The footprints were found recently in the area of Big Sandy Creek by a volunteer group, according to Travis County Judge Andy Brown who spoke to ABC News. Brown is the chief executive for the county. Due to the footprints being located on private property, the owner has requested that the exact location remain a secret. Paleontologists from the University of Texas gave confirmation that at least 15 footprints were discovered, UT Austin paleontologist Matthew Brown told ABC News. Every footprint had a measure of 18-20 inches long and ages back to 110-115 million years ago, per Brown.

The footprints belonged to a meat-eating dinosaur that is similar to a 35-foot-long carnivore known as the Acrocanthosaurus, according to Brown. There were also other footprints located in a nearby spot that potentially belongs to a herbivorous sauropod dinosaur branded the Paluxysaurus, which happens to be Texas‘ official state dinosaur.
