Food stamps: October SNAP payments worth $1,751 end for New Mexico residents in two days

Eligible New Mexico residents who have not received payments from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program can expect to collect over the next two days before the program wraps up for October.

The average payment per household member per month in New Mexico is $182. About 25% of the population, or 518,800 people, receive food stamps in the state.

The maximum payment is $291 for a household of one, $1,155 for a household of five, and $1,751 for a household of eight. For each household member above eight, $219 is added.

New Mexicans receive food stamps from SNAP beginning on the first of the month and ending on the 20th. SNAP benefits are sent out to households based on the last two digits of the Social Security number associated with their SNAP account. Only three groups receiving food stamps are left for October.

Households with an SSN ending in 09, 29, 69, and 89 will receive benefits on Wednesday. Households with an SSN ending in 10, 30, 50, 70, and 90 will collect on Thursday, and recipients with an SSN ending in 00, 20, 40, 60, and 80 will collect on Friday.

New Mexico also issues benefits on a staggered schedule. Households that become eligible for food stamps after their SSN passes or after Oct. 20 will still receive payments for October and will not need to wait until November.

SNAP benefit recipients will see the amount transferred to a prepaid electronic benefits transfer card. In New Mexico, the EBT card is called the “Fiesta Card.” It works similarly to a debit card and can be used at grocery stores and farmers markets or at some online retailers. The money is intended for purchasing healthy foods.
