Marine killed in homicide at Camp Lejeune with second Marine a suspect

A Marine was killed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina on Wednesday night, and another Marine is in custody on suspicion of being involved, base officials said.

At approximately 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, Camp Lejeune law enforcement authorities apprehended a Marine believed to be involved in the death of another Marine, the base said. The killing occurred in an on-base barracks room earlier that evening.

The base did not provide any details as to how the Marine died, but the death was classified as a homicide, and the second Marine in custody was described as a suspect.

Camp Lejeune is located on the North Carolina coast, with roughly 240 square miles of land. Its beaches and deep-water ports allow Marines to conduct amphibious assault training and other exercises to prepare Marines for missions abroad.

The Marine’s death came two days before the base was set to conduct Exercise Urgent Response, its annual exercise focused on emergency security procedures.

“This annual exercise is not connected in any way to the ongoing events in the Middle East,” Camp Lejeune said in its statement announcing the annual EUR.
