US Airline Ending Services In Over 10 Major Cities

Spirit Airlines will stop flying to 12 cities on Oct. 2, abandoning major markets as the budget carrier fights through its second bankruptcy this year, CBS News reports.

The Florida-based airline confirmed Thursday it will exit Albuquerque, Birmingham, Boise, Chattanooga, Oakland, Columbia, Portland, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Jose and cancel planned service to Macon, Georgia. The route cuts come after Spirit filed for bankruptcy protection again in August, just months after emerging from its November 2024 Chapter 11 reorganization, according to CBS News.

“We apologize to our Guests for any inconvenience this may cause and will reach out to those with affected reservations to notify them of their options, including a refund,” a Spirit spokesperson said in a statement to the outlet.

The company cited weak demand for domestic leisure travel and admitted “substantial doubt” about staying in business. United Airlines moved fast in response, announcing 15 new city routes starting Jan. 6 to capture Spirit’s abandoned customers. “If Spirit suddenly goes out of business it will be incredibly disruptive, so we’re adding these flights to give their customers other options if they want or need them,” said Patrick Quayle, United’s senior vice president of global network planning and alliances.

Spirit fired back at United’s announcement.

“While we appreciate the obsession certain airline executives have with us, we’re focused on competing and running a great operation,” a Spirit spokesperson said, insisting the airline will offer low fares “for many years to come.” (RELATED: Budget Airline Posts Huge Loss After Biden Admin Tanks Merger)

Frontier Airlines joined the scramble, launching 20 new routes from Detroit, Houston, Baltimore, Fort Lauderdale, Charlotte and Dallas, with fares starting at $29.

Spirit continues operating its remaining routes while restructuring its finances.
