A hurricane shipwrecked the 1715 Treasure Fleet in July of that year, which caused the ships to wreck into reefs that are along the eastern coast of Florida. It’s estimated by historians that $400 million worth of treasure went down into the ocean along with the ships.

Per 1715 Fleet – Queens Jewels, historical pieces from the ships have been found throughout the past century.

According to the salvage operation, their most recent discovery was courtesy of Capt. Levin Shavers and the M/V Just Right crew.

The coins are shown on photographs as they were found and before conservation efforts.

“This discovery is not only about the treasure itself, but the stories it tells,” stated 1715 Fleet – Queen Jewels director of operations Sal Guttuso. “Each coin is a piece of history, a tangible link to the people who lived, worked, and sailed during the Golden Age of the Spanish Empire. Finding 1,000 of them in a single recovery is both rare and extraordinary.”

A total of five Escudos (gold coins) and 1,000 Reales (silver coins) were discovered.
