Dallas police arrested a 22-year-old woman Tuesday after she allegedly shot and killed another woman who scolded her for not saying “thank you” when a door was held open.

The argument began moments earlier inside a Five Below store, according to an arrest affidavit, where Simpson held the door for Hampton and grew angry when she didn’t respond. The two exchanged words before Simpson and a witness drove to a nearby PetSmart. Hampton allegedly followed, entering the store twice to continue the confrontation before employees told both women to leave.

The argument escalated outside, where Hampton allegedly threw a bottle at Simpson’s vehicle, police said. Simpson got out and the two began fighting. A witness told investigators Simpson struck Hampton several times while yelling at her to leave, according to CBS News.

Hampton then pulled a black and silver handgun and fired three shots, hitting Simpson, police said. Simpson collapsed and was later pronounced dead at Methodist Central Hospital.

Detectives used surveillance footage to trace Hampton’s black 2005 Ford Five Hundred to an apartment complex on John West Road. Officers arrested her during a traffic stop around 7:45 p.m.

Hampton admitted to shooting Simpson during the fight, telling detectives she was “just trying to get [Simpson] away from her,” according to the affidavit.

The witness who accompanied Simpson asked to remain anonymous.
