Woman Killed By Flying Solar Panel As US Region Gets Blasted With Powerful Storm

At least one person has been killed as a result of a nor’easter that has unleashed strong wind gusts, heavy rainfall and coastal flooding along the East Coast since developing over the weekend.

The nor’easter is still blasting the Northeast and New England, which has triggered New York City to declare a state of emergency and several travel delays and cancellations at airports across the Interstate 95 corridor. According to authorities per CBS News, a 76-year-old woman was killed in Brooklyn after a solar panel broke loose in the winds, flew around 20 feet in the air and struck her on the sidewalk that she was on.

The death comes as emergency personnel are investigating a fatal plane crash that took place in Massachusetts, which resulted in a busy highway closing Monday morning that caused even further travel delays in the region.

Airports in the Northeast, such as New York City area’s LaGuardia and Newark Liberty International, as well as Massachusetts’ Boston Logan International, have seen thousands of flight delays while cancellations have been in the hundreds.

Over 5,000 flights have been delayed and more than 900 have been cancelled in the United States, according to FlightAware.com.

It’s being warned by officials that those figures could potentially get larger.

This is a result of the extreme weather that’s being caused by the nor’easter, which has featured wind, rain and low ceilings that have prevented flights from landings and departures at Northeast airports. Callouts from employees during the government shutdown have also contributed to delays throughout the United States.
