Stimulus update: Deadline to file taxes for rebate of up to $400 in Virginia in eight days

Residents in the commonwealth of Virginia have eight more days to file their 2022 state income taxes to qualify for a tax rebate of up to $400.

State income tax returns for 2022 must be filed by the Nov. 1 extended deadline to qualify for the rebate, which is expected to roll out payments shortly. The regular deadline to file 2022 Virginia state income taxes was May 1, 2023. If a taxpayer filed at the regular deadline, no additional steps are required to get the rebate if eligible.

The rebates will be worth up to $200 for individual filers and up to $400 for joint filers, according to the state. Not all taxpayers in the state will be eligible for the rebate, but those with a tax liability will be eligible.

The taxpayer-specific eligibility information is unavailable but will be announced later, according to the Virginia Department of Taxation. The state does offer answers to common eligibility questions for the tax rebate on its website.

This set of tax rebates comes a year after Virginians received tax rebates of up to $500 in 2022. Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) reminded residents to file their taxes by the Nov. 1 deadline to receive their tax rebate in a press release earlier this month.

“As Virginians continue to face inflation and high prices as a direct result of policies out of Washington, D.C., these rebates are an important step going into the holiday season to help Virginians keep more of their hard-earned money for gas, groceries, and essentials,” Youngkin said.

“My administration has delivered over $5 billion in tax relief to Virginians, and we remain committed to lowering the cost of living for working families and veterans across Virginia. It’s their money, not the government’s,” he added.

Youngkin’s office said last week that rebates would begin going out in the coming days. The rebates will be sent to taxpayers by direct deposit or check, depending on how they elected to receive their tax refund for the year.
