A would-be burglar in California died after he tried to rob a gun store with a hammer, authorities said.

The incident occurred Sunday around 2:30 p.m. after an individual “wearing a mask, a hooded sweatshirt pulled over his head and gloves” entered East Bay Firearms and began acting “suspicious,” according to a report citing the Livermore Police Department.

Identified as a 28-year-old man from Redwood, California, the would-be burglar tried to rob the store owner while brandishing a hammer and swiping at a gun, police said.

The owner responded by grabbing a firearm and firing at least two shots, according to the report.

Authorities were called, and when they arrived at the scene, they found the wounded suspect, who later died at the scene.

At least five customers were in East Bay Firearms during the attempted burglary, but no other injuries were reported.
