Joe Biden will not be on the New Hampshire primary ballot for 2024

President Joe Biden will not be on the New Hampshire primary ballot for the 2024 presidential election.

Julie Chavez Rodriguez, Biden’s campaign manager, announced the news in a letter to Raymond Buckley, chairman of the New Hampshire Democratic Party, on Tuesday. Rodriguez cited guidance from the Democratic National Committee that said not to file for a spot on the state’s primary ballot.

“While the president wishes to participate in the Primary, he is obligated as a Democratic candidate for President to comply with the Delegate Selection Rules for the 2024 Democratic National Convention promulgated by the Democratic National Committee,” she wrote. “On October 24, 2023, the Democratic National Committee’s Rules & Bylaws Committee issued guidance urging Democratic campaigns to refrain from placing candidates’ names on the ballot.”

“Biden for President will refrain from submitting a Declaration of Candidacy for the Primary ahead of Friday’s candidate filing deadline for the Primary,” she added.

Rodriguez specified in the letter that the decision was only for the primary, and she said Biden “looks forward to having his name on New Hampshire’s general election ballot as the nominee of the Democratic Party after officially securing the nomination at the 2024 Democratic National Convention.”

The news comes as Biden shows a seemingly stable lead over GOP opponents for president in the state. A FiveThirtyEight poll from September had him comfortably defeating all GOP candidates should they win the party’s nomination. His closest opponent was former President Donald Trump, who garnered 40% of the vote compared to Biden’s 52%.

That same poll had Biden handily defeating then-Democratic challenger Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who failed to garner double-digit support, and Biden clocked in at nearly 80% support.

Almost a month after the poll was taken, Kennedy switched parties from Democratic to independent.

Since Kennedy switched parties, Politico has reported that Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) has been signaling that he could primary Biden.

It is unclear whether Phillips will appear on the New Hampshire 2024 Democratic primary ballot.
