Fire Risk Prompts Car Company To Recall 320,000 Vehicles

Chrysler recalled more than 320,000 Jeep plug-in hybrid SUVs after high-voltage batteries failed and caused fires in parked and moving vehicles.

The automaker recalled 320,065 Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrid models over faulty high-voltage batteries that could catch fire whether the vehicle sits parked or moves down the road, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced Thursday. Federal regulators warned owners to stop charging the vehicles immediately. (RELATED: Biden Declared EV Battery Plant Would Be Win For American Workers. Illegals Just Got Caught Building It.)

The recall affects Jeep Wrangler 4Xe models from 2020 through 2025 and Grand Cherokee 4Xe vehicles from 2022 through 2026. About 5% of the recalled SUVs may have the defect, according to NHTSA.

“Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures and not to charge their vehicles until the remedy is completed,” NHTSA said in its recall notice.

The agency said Chrysler has not yet developed a fix for the problem. The company did not provide details about the injury linked to the battery fires.

The recalled Jeeps contain high-voltage battery packs with cells susceptible to damage that can trigger fires, according to NHTSA documents. The defect poses risks whether owners drive their vehicles or leave them parked.

Stellantis, which owns Chrysler, will mail warning letters to affected owners on Dec. 2. The company will send additional notices once it develops a remedy.

The recall adds to mounting safety concerns over electric vehicle batteries across the auto industry, as Audi recalled 6,499 e-tron GT and RS e-tron GT units and Porsche recalled 27,527 Taycans in October 2024 due to battery pack defects that could increase fire risk, according to SlashGear. Samsung SDI batteries installed in plug-in hybrid vehicles from FCA US, Ford, and Audi triggered recalls earlier this year, Wards Auto reported.

Owners can check if their vehicle falls under the recall by entering their vehicle identification number on NHTSA’s website.
