Minnesota residents have until May 2024 to apply for the state’s Energy Assistance Program, which helps to pay heating and electricity costs.
Energy assistance is free for Minnesota households. The payments for energy bills are sent directly to a household’s energy company, or the payments go to the delivered fuel provider if the household runs on things like propane, fuel, oil, or wood. Initial benefits range from an average of $500 to a maximum of $1,400.

Renters and homeowners are eligible for the Energy Assistance Program, and eligibility is based on household size and the three most recent months of household income. For example, a family of four could earn up to $62,822 annually and qualify to receive financial assistance with energy bills, according to the Minnesota Commerce Department.
The Energy Assistance Program provides up to $600 in additional grants for eligible Minnesotans who need help preventing disconnection, getting reconnected to heat and power after disconnections, or paying for emergency fuel deliveries of propane, heating oil, or biofuel.

An applicant will need to provide the names of the people of the household, their Social Security number, household income documentation, housing information, names of energy companies supplying the heat and electricity, and any emergency heating needs that a household may have.
Applications must submitted by May 31, 2024. The applications will be reviewed in the order received, so getting an application in earlier is suggested. Once approved, the local Energy Assistance Program will notify the household.
