Stimulus update: Deadline to file taxes for rebate of up to $400 in Virginia in five days

October 27, 2023 01:13 PM

There are only five more days for residents in the commonwealth of Virginia to file their 2022 state income taxes to qualify for a tax rebate of up to $400.

Taxpayers must file their returns in the Old Dominion by the Nov. 1 extended deadline in order to qualify for the rebate. The deadline is six months after the regular May 1, 2023, deadline to file 2022 Virginia state income taxes. If an individual resident filed in accordance with the regular deadline, no additional steps are required to get the rebate.

Payments from the tax rebate are now being sent out to taxpayers either via direct deposit or paper check, depending on how they received their refund earlier this year.

Rebates are worth up to $200 for individual filers and up to $400 for joint filers. Not all taxpayers in the state will be eligible for the rebate, but those with a tax liability will be eligible. The Virginia Department of Taxation has a website for residents to check if they are eligible for the rebate and how much they are eligible for.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) announced on Tuesday that the distribution of the tax rebate would begin on Wednesday to eligible taxpayers in the commonwealth. The distribution is going out on a rolling basis over a three-week period.

“We’re excited to announce that tax rebates will begin to be distributed in the coming days. As Virginians continue to face inflation and high prices as a direct result of policies out of Washington, D.C., these rebates are an important step going into the holiday season to help Virginians keep more of their hard-earned money for gas, groceries and essentials,” Youngkin said in a statement.

“My administration has delivered over $5 billion in tax relief to Virginians, and we’re pleased that these rebates will provide needed relief to Virginians,” the governor said.
