Security footage revealed Nebraska State Sen. Machaela Cavanaugh, a Democrat from Omaha, appearing to systemically remove framed portraits from a temporary PragerU exhibit in the State Capitol rotunda on Wednesday.
The display was part of a Founders Museum initiative marking America’s approaching 250th anniversary, featuring signers of the Declaration of Independence alongside important historical figures like Phillis Wheatley. Cavanaugh cited Capitol Commission rules that prohibit displays outside designated office areas, characterizing the materials as prohibited objects. Yet the video shows her stacking the portraits outside her office door, prompting Republican Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen to condemn the act.
