Stimulus update: Deadline to file taxes for rebate of up to $400 in Virginia in two days

Residents in Virginia have two more days to file their 2022 state income taxes to qualify for a tax rebate of up to $400.

To be eligible for the state’s tax rebate, taxpayers must file their returns in the Old Dominion by the Nov. 1 extended deadline. This deadline is six months after the regular May 1, 2023, deadline to file 2022 Virginia state income taxes. If a resident filed his or her income taxes at the regular deadline, no additional steps are required to get the rebate.

Rebates are worth up to $200 for individual filers and up to $400 for joint filers. Not every taxpayer in the state will be eligible for this rebate, but those with a tax liability are among those who are eligible. The Virginia Department of Taxation has created a website for residents to check if they are eligible for the rebate and how much money are eligible for in this rebate.

The tax rebate from the state is going out now to eligible residents in the state, either via direct deposit or paper check, depending on how they received their refund earlier this year.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) announced last week that the distribution of the tax rebate would begin on Oct. 25 to eligible taxpayers in the commonwealth, with distribution going out on a rolling basis over a three-week period. Youngkin said the rebates will help residents “keep more of their hard-earned money.”

“We’re excited to announce that tax rebates will begin to be distributed in the coming days. As Virginians continue to face inflation and high prices as a direct result of policies out of Washington, D.C., these rebates are an important step going into the holiday season to help Virginians keep more of their hard-earned money for gas, groceries and essentials,” Youngkin said in a statement.

“My administration has delivered over $5 billion in tax relief to Virginians, and we’re pleased that these rebates will provide needed relief to Virginians,” the governor said.
