While the Biden administration’s monthly child tax credit to help families with the costs of raising children has ended, multiple states are issuing their own versions of the child tax credit.

California is offering families a fully refundable one-time tax credit worth up to $3,600 per qualifying child in 2024, along with an additional young child tax credit for children under 6 years old.

Families can still claim a child tax credit by filing a 2021 tax return before April 18, 2025, according to the California Department of Social Services. Households can file for and claim a previous year’s tax credit for up to three years from the due date of a tax return.

The young child tax credit is worth up to $1,083 per tax return. Qualifying families must have a child under 6 years old and be eligible for the California earned income tax credit. The phaseout for the YCTC begins at $25,000 of earnings and ends at $30,986 of earnings. There is also a dependent exemption worth $438, according to the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy.

To qualify for the CalETC, a recipient must be at least 18 years old or have a dependent child and have an earned income of at least $1 and not more than $30,000. They must have lived in California for more than half of the filing year and cannot be claimed as a qualifying child of another taxpayer or as a dependent of another taxpayer unless they have a qualifying child.

Families with one qualifying child and a maximum income of $30,000 can receive up to $1,843 from the CalETC. Families with two qualifying children can receive up to $3,037 from the CalETC, and families with three or more qualifying children can receive up to $3,417 from the CalETC.

All eligible families, regardless of the number of qualifying children, will receive up to $1,083 from the YCTC, given it is per tax return and not per child.
